The way we elect our representatives matters. In a representative democracy like ours, any change to the voting system has to be driven through Parliament and that means building real support among MPs.

That is why the work of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Votes is so important. Over the past year, the APPG has been actively engaging with MPs from across the House and has grown into one of the largest All-Party Parliamentary Groups in Parliament. Notably, a significant proportion of its members are now Labour MPs, reflecting growing concern within the party about the health of our democratic system.

The APPG is calling for the establishment of a National Commission on Electoral Reform, tasked with examining how our voting system works in practice and recommending a fairer, more representative alternative. Alongside this, the group is also pushing for stronger action to tackle the influence of “dark money” in politics and to address the growing threat of disinformation on social media, both of which risk undermining public trust in elections.

These issues are set out in the APPG’s first Annual Report, which takes a hard look at the state of British democracy and the reforms needed to restore confidence in our political system.

You can read the report in full here, and we encourage members to take a look at the recommendations being made. A healthier democracy depends not just on participation, but on ensuring that every vote truly counts.
