Why PR for the House of Commons is our #1 campaign

LCER supports a wide range of democratic reforms. But proportional representation for the House of Commons is our number 1 priority.

Why? Because without PR, many other constitutional reforms will have no traction. Imagine giving young people votes at age 16 - only for many youngsters to find their votes don't count at all. Or democratising the House of Lords - but leaving the main chamber of government open to years of corrupt Tory majorities on well under half the vote, as it is now.

what do we mean by a proportional voting system?

We believe that the composition of Parliament should broadly match the way that people voted. A party that gets (say) 25% of the vote should get roughly 25% of the seats in Parliament. Our campaign is not linked to the introduction of a specific electoral system; we believe that the final choice of voting system will rest with the Labour government that introduces PR, and should be determined by an open and inclusive process.

In particular, we are not campaigning for a completely proportional voting system; we believe that the UK would be better served by a broadly proportional system that maintained a strong local link between MPs and their constituents.
