We did it!

Monday 26 September

Today is a historic day – the Labour Party Conference has committed to introducing Proportional Representation for the House of Commons.

We knew we were winning the argument last year, when 80% of Constituency Labour Parties voted for PR. But this year, with key trade unions also on board, we’ve achieved a win to be proud of. It’s official: the whole Labour movement really does support electoral reform.

Today’s vote is the result of a long campaign, together with our partners in Labour for a New Democracy, and other organisations from across the labour movement. Thanks to the amazing staff who have coordinated this effort. And thanks also to every single one of our members and supporters – for every meeting you have addressed, every conversation you’ve had, every letter you’ve written, every phone call you’ve made, every motion and debate you have taken part in, every subscription you have paid. We couldn’t have done it without you.

We must not rest on our laurels – there’s still a lot of work to do to translate this wave of enthusiasm into solid action from our Party. But for now, let’s celebrate. Thank you.
