The Labour Government elected in 2024 has a historic mission to not only regain the trust in the UK of our partners throughout the world, and especially in Europe, but also to regain the trust of our own citizens in our politics.
The disproportionate nature of national governments in the UK, as a result of our electoral system, reduces the perception of legitimacy and the strength of the moral mandate that they can command. The electoral system for the House of Commons also results in a huge element of unpredictability for the future, and the prospect of much of the good work of the current government being undermined by an incoming majority government on a minority of the vote.
Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform believes that a move towards a proportional system for elections to the House of Commons would be the single most effective measure to restore both voter confidence in our politics and consistency in the UK’s approach to policy, both at home and abroad. We call on the government to institute a National Commission to examine alternatives to First Past the Post for UK general elections at the earliest possible opportunity.
